The Fields Good festival was an excuse for a little bit of an adventure to Northern Ireland, I arrived via Dublin on the Saturday morning. It was in a very scenic location, a smaller event than i anticipated but it soon proved to be a worthwhile trip. The fact that the event was easier to get around, meant that there was more time to sit and listen.
An absolute highlight was the presentation from James Rebanks. James and his wife Helen farm in a very different part of the country to Norfolk, however the presentation was very relevant. It was great to hear about how they had thought through their business aims and been able to make changes to respond to changing circumstances. The other really interesting part of James’s presentation was his discussion about how they have developed a landscape management business which is built around their grazing livestock. They have been able to show enhanced biodiversity as a result of their grazing management, this has led to people asking them to manage new blocks of land.
Nikki Yoxall was also a very interesting speaker, she had a strong focus on profitability, she discussed grassland management and also the importance of low fixed costs.
The Monil cattle collar stand was really interesting, it would be great to try some of these out one day.
Virtual fencing for grazing animals
In all it was well worth a visit and served to be a refreshing and inspiring way to spend a weekend.
